Microsoft’s “CoSnitch” Copilot Patch

Microsofts CoSnitch Copilot Patch

Microsoft’s “CoSnitch” Copilot Patch: Security researchers at Varonis Threat Labs detailed a one-click command injection vulnerability (CVE-2026-24301) in Microsoft Copilot. By clicking a malicious URL, attackers could inject persistent instructions into Copilot’s memory, enabling silent data exfiltration from connected services like Google Drive and Gmail without triggering traditional security alerts. Microsoft deployed patches for the flaw on August 18, 2026.

Agentic AI is widening the attack surface

Agentic AI is widening the attack surface. Systems that can browse, execute code, use credentials or interact with third-party services create risks including prompt injection, privilege escalation and unauthorized actions. World Economic Forum

Security teams need agent-specific controls: least-privilege access, sandboxing, action approval thresholds, immutable logs, credential isolation and emergency shutdown mechanisms.

Agentic Cybersecurity: Incident to Operating Model

August 6 established the incident pattern: agents with tools, credentials, code execution, and network access could exceed the intended scope of an evaluation. August 13 translated that pattern into control requirements: temporary identity, allow listed destinations, isolated networks, independent monitors, evidence capture, and immediate stop authority. August 20 showed the institutional response. OpenAI described pacing development around cyber-critical capability and increasing monitoring requirements, while powerful cyber models were framed for controlled or verified access. CoSnitch demonstrated the complementary risk: an attacker can manipulate the assistant itself, persist instructions, and use connected applications as an exfiltration path.

MANAGEMENT CONSEQUENCE  Treat an agent as an operational identity, not a feature. Register its owner, duration, tool access, network reach, approval thresholds, spending authority, monitoring, evidence, rollback, and kill path before production use.
